"Plying your way through Europe's famous waterways is a wonderful alternative to taking a coach tour or doing a self-drive. Your cabin is your hotel and it almost always enjoys a location in the heart of town, as you travel from one village to another in style. Virtually all of Europe's history took place on the banks of its mighty rivers. Cruise the Danube, the Rhine, the Seine, the Douro and more. Choices range from luxury to budget.
River cruising in Europe has become very popular for both first-time and experienced travellers. Like any holiday, it's good to be aware of what you should consider when booking and planning. For instance, many of the river cruise operators offer early bird discounts or specials. Sometimes they will offer a higher standard cabin at a lower cabin price. Ask us to keep an eye out for these for you if you're interested.
Watch out for the lowest deck cabins, as sometimes their windows can go below the waterline as the ship ballast is adjusted to go under some bridges. Also be aware of ships that offer "French Balconies" which are actually floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, but have no real balcony to stand on.
Try and find itineraries that offer a gentle pace, as the best river cruises are those that allow you to really immerse yourself in life on the riverbanks. Borrow a bicycle from the ship for a leisurely cycle along the banks of the Danube River, or take a walking tour through medieval cobblestone streets with 16th century town houses and wine taverns. History at its quaintest best.
Also - don't forget the other parts of the world offer incredible river cruising, expecially Asia, " - Christine Sheppard, World Travellers Consultant.
